Starting and idling problems

Problems are annoying when they suddenly appear and prevent you from driving. However, often the problem is much smaller than you might think. In the best case scenario, they can be fixed the same day. On this page, we'll explain some common problems, what causes them, and how to fix them.

Only starts with a drink on

Possible causes: Idle jet too small - Idle jet clogged - Mixture adjusted too lean

Solution: First try cleaning the idle jet, but if that doesn't help, replace it with a larger jet and adjust the carburetor to a richer setting.

Starts but turns off immediately

Possible causes: Dirty carburetor - Idle speed set too low

Solution: Adjust the idle speed higher with the idle screw. Clean the entire carburetor.

Run at high idle speeds

Possible causes: Throttle cable tight - Small idle jet - Adjusted too lean - Air cleaner not lubricated

Solution: Check that the throttle cable returns completely, otherwise the throttle is slightly open all the time. Change to a larger idle jet and adjust the idle to a lower setting. If the air cleaner is not oiled, do so, otherwise too much air will be allowed through.
