Electrical faults

Problems are annoying when they suddenly appear and prevent you from driving. However, often the problem is much smaller than you might think. In the best case scenario, they can be fixed the same day. On this page, we'll explain some common problems, what causes them, and how to fix them.

The front light is not on.

Possible causes: Burnt bulb (most likely) - Damaged wiring - Battery is flat

Solution: First check the condition of the wires to make sure there is no damage or loose wire. If the wires are in good condition, charge the battery or replace the battery, and if that doesn't help, replace the bulb with a new one.

Spark is completely missing

Possible causes: Old/defective plug (most likely) - Broken CDI box - Broken coil - Lack of grounding

Solution: First try changing a new spark plug. After changing the spark plug, check the condition of the coil and CDI, you can also try another coil or CDI if possible. Finally, check the ground (often the black wire to the frame).

General information about electricity

If an electrical component such as the front light, rear light, indicators or meter is not working, the first thing to do is to check the wires. The wires should not be damaged or have exposed copper and there should be no extra wires loose. If any wire is exposed, replace it with a new one or cover it properly. If the wires are loose, find out if they should be loose and if not, reconnect them properly. If the wires show exposed copper (old bikes often do), you should not ride in the rain, as this can cause a short circuit.
