Important Parts and Operation

The main parts of a bike and what they do

There's more to a motorcycle than just the engine to make it work properly. Here's a look at the most important parts and their functions - what they do and why they directly impact your riding experience, reliability and performance.

Why is this good to know?

Once you understand what the different parts do:

-You know how to maintain your bike at the right time

-You identify problems faster

-You know which parts to replace – and why

Carburetor

The carburetor mixes air and fuel in the correct ratio before it enters the engine.

Parts: nozzles, needle valve, float chamber, needle

Important: wrong mixture = loss of power or engine damage

Air cleaner

Filters out dust and debris before the air enters the engine.

Important: clean air = better running and engine protection

Ignition parts

The spark plug and the rest of the ignition system provide the spark at the right moment.

E.g. spark plug, CDI unit, stator

Important: without spark the engine will not run

Drivetrain: Chain, sprocket

The engine's power is transferred to the rear wheel via a chain and sprockets.

Front sprocket → chain → rear sprocket

Important: a well-adjusted and clean chain = consistent power and long service life

Suspension and fork

The front fork and rear shock absorb vibrations and keep the tires on the road.

Fork oil seals and dust covers prevent oil leaks

Important: functional suspension = ride comfort and control

Exhaust pipe and gaskets

The exhaust pipe directs exhaust gases away from the engine. O-rings and fittings prevent leaks.

Important: a intact exhaust pipe = the right sound, good power and fewer leaks

Electrical parts

Starting, ignition and lights are powered by electricity.

Wires, switches, battery (if applicable)

Important: working electricity = reliability and safety
