Clutch and brake problems

Problems are annoying when they appear suddenly and prevent you from driving. However, often the problem is much smaller than you might think. In the best case scenario, they can be fixed the same day. On this page, we'll explain some common problems, what causes them, and how to fix them.

Clutch slips/Rpm increases but speed does not

Possible causes: Worn clutch plates - Clutch cable too tight (on cable clutches)

Solution: Replace the new clutch plates, and it is also a good idea to replace the spacers and clutch springs at the same time. If your bike has a cable clutch, check that it is not too tight and if it is loose.

The clutch does not disengage properly.

Possible causes: Loose or stuck cable - Worn clutch springs

Solution: Check the clutch cable (cable clutch) or bleed the clutch (hydraulic clutch). Replace with new clutch springs.

Reduced brake performance

Possible causes: Worn brake pads - Air in the brakes

Solution: Bleed the brakes and if braking performance is still poor, replace the brake pads.

Brakes drag/Brake constantly

Possible causes: Brake cylinder stuck (hydraulic brakes) - Brake pads installed incorrectly - Cable too tight (cable brakes)

Solution: Replace or service the brake cylinder, check that the brake pads are installed correctly. Adjust the cable or replace it with a new one, lubricating the cable will also make it easier.

Brakes or clutch feel loose/squeaky

Possible causes: Air in the system or old brake fluid (hydraulic) - Loose cables (cable)

Solution: Replace the cables with new ones if they are worn. Bleed the system until new clear fluid comes out of the bleed nipple. At the same time, check the system for leaks.
